Ladies and gentlemen, tonight is a night of sadness for lovers of greyhound racing on the Gold Coast and for those of you who've been associated with this venue for two decades.

Parklands was officially opened in December, 1988, but this has been the home of Gold Coast greyhound racing for 22 years.

Its original home was taken over to accommodate Southport State School, which had outgrown its original premises.

The resumption of this site is occurring to fulfil another urgent community need - I'm sure no-one here would deny that - the construction of a major new hospital, a $1.55 billion complex located at the heart of one of the most rapidly growing regions of Australia.

The Queensland Government is well aware that setting up a new greyhound racing complex will be an expensive undertaking and so we're providing $10 million towards its cost - where it will be located and when it will open are matters that haven't been decided.

But tonight let's enjoy the racing, in particular the $25,000 2008 Gold Coast Cup.

Let's make the last night of greyhound racing at this venue a special occasion, a night to remember.

There have been many memorable meetings here, and none of them would have been possible without the unstinting efforts of the club's committee and the dedication of all the staff and management.

I wish the Gold Coast Greyhound Racing Club all the best for the future, and I hope that it won't be too long before we can all meet again in a new venue to enjoy many more years of racing here in this wonderful part of Queensland.

Thank you very much.
