Member for Southport Peter Lawlor, will welcome the new $ 4.9 million boarding house construction which is now underway in Labrador to aid those that are homeless or at risk.

Minister for Housing Robert Schwarten reported that 26 one - bedroom single units were being constructed at 237 Government Road and were expected to be completed by the end of the year.

"I'm pleased that the state government will deliver the singles units for people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless on the Gold Coast," Mr Lawlor said.

"The complex will provide accommodation on a medium or long term basis in self-contained studio apartments.

"In recent years we have seen the dramatic loss of traditional forms of affordable private rental dwellings in urban areas particularly on the Gold Coast" he said.

"The Beattie Government has demonstrated a strong commitment to reverse this trend by allocating an extra $40 million in this year's State Budget to provide boarding house accommodation throughout Queensland."

"Not only will this development provide more affordable housing options for the Gold Coast community it will also generate jobs and training opportunities for the local construction industry," he said.

"This construction builds on the Beattie Government's strong commitment to housing on the Gold Coast with around $200 million spent to build new housing and deliver housing related services in the area."
