House numbers vital in an emergency

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, is urging local residents not to unwittingly put their lives at risk by not having easy to see house numbers.

Mr Lawlor said people have to ask themselves, if they need an ambulance or fire crew, especially at night, could they easily spot their house number from a passing vehicle, or is their house number difficult to see from the road.

"Garden plants may have become overgrown and obscured the numbers, or worse still they could have fallen off," Mr Lawlor said.

"All these problems could cost you or a loved one valuable minutes in an emergency."

Mr Lawlor said the Queensland Ambulance Service advises that when you phone triple zero you should give as much information as you can to the operator.

"If you live near a shop, traffic lights or even an Australia Post box, let the operator know," he said.

"If you live on a battleaxe block, let them know, as that will make finding you a lot easier.

"And if you can, have someone waiting out the front to wave the ambulance down.

Mr Lawlor said more remote properties also need clear identification visible from the road.

"Anything that will help paramedics and firefighters find your house quicker could save your life," he said.

"Seconds count in an emergency and people can help paramedics or firefighters get there quicker by making sure they are easy to find."
