Huge health and education Budget boost for coast

Today's 10th Beattie Government State Budget has delivered multi-million dollar funding for the Gold Coast's educational institutions.

Southport MP Peter Lawlor announced the Budget allocated $31.09 million to Queensland Academy for Health Sciences to complete construction of the Health Sciences Academy.

"This is a fantastic boost to educational opportunities on the coast and it reflects the region's place as one of the top two fastest growing areas of the state," Mr Lawlor said.

"With the sort of population increases we are experiencing, it's vital we have facilities like this.

"I'm also pleased to announce $2.5 million to Southport State High School to complete development of the home economics block.

"Queenslanders everywhere deserve the very best in educational facilities."

Mr Lawlor said the record health Budget of $7.15 Billion included significant coast funding including:

• $4.87 million, from a statewide commitment of $60 Million, to Griffith University to train new doctors to work in Queensland Public Hospitals
• $5.03 million to community organisations under the Home and Community Care program
• $62,000 for Child Health Services in the Northern Gold Coast Area
• $1.67 million provided to Griffith University to provide additional dental services for eligible patients at its School of Dentistry clinic in Southport
• $488,000 to support the drug court trial in Southport
• $5.12 million to upgrade the Emergency Department at the Gold Coast Hospital by increasing inpatient capacity by 30 acute beds
• $14.5 million towards the development of the new 750 bed Gold Coast University Hospital at Parklands



He said funding for Southport roads included:

• $5.42 million for planning and land acquisition between Stapylton and Nerang, on the Intra Regional Transport Corridor
• $550,000 to complete concept planning between the Gold Coast Highway and Southport-Nerang Road, on Labrador-Carrara Road
• $4.47 million for duplication from two to four lanes between Government Road and Robert Street, on the Gold Coast Highway
• $9 million for widening to six lanes between Pacific Motorway and High Street on the Smith Street Connection Road
• $886,000 to complete the resurfacing on Southport - Burleigh Road
• $2.11 million to complete bus priority works on Smith Street Connection Road
• $1.23 million for widening to four lanes between Minnie Street and Queen Street, on Southport-Nerang Road
• $11.46 million to complete widening to four lanes between Robert Street and Stevens Street, on the Gold Coast Highway

"With the level of population increase we are experiencing, it is also crucial we get community facilities right," Mr Lawlor said.

"The Budget does that with record funding in this area."

For Southport, the funding includes:

• $6.45 million to the Gold Coast City Council to assist with the redevelopment of Southport Broadwater Parklands
• $964,000 to Gold Coast Community Housing Association under the Community Rent Scheme to provide short and medium-term accommodation to public housing applicants in need of immediate housing
• $1.54 million to complete construction of 16 public housing apartment units for low income earners
• $286,000 to assist Gold Coast Turf Club with costs of maintaining training facilities
• $207,000 to provide a sexual abuse counselling service to children & young people in care
• $320,000 to improve the sustainability of Non-Government organisations delivering services to people with a disability
• $875,000 to provide a counselling support service, counselling, referral and support for women and children affected by domestic and family violence

Finally, Mr Lawlor said $2.55 million had been allocated for the redevelopment of the Southport Fire Station.

"The Treasurer Anna Bligh has delivered a solid Budget for the Queensland of today and tomorrow
