Mr Mark Donohoo, President of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (IPSE) Professor Peter Andrews, Queensland Chief Scientist Conference Delegates Ladies and Gentlemen
I would like to welcome you all to the Smart State on behalf of the Queensland Government and the Minister for State Development and Innovation, Tony McGrady, who could not be with us here this evening.
Thank you for inviting me to attend this dinner reception hosted by the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering.
Let me say how pleased I am to be in the company of so many life-science engineers from key local, national and international pharmaceutical companies.
It is fitting that the Smart State is hosting the ISPE conference because pharmaceuticals is one of Queensland's Smart industries.
It's global, it's knowledge-intensive and it requires highly-skilled workers.
It's also going to help diversify our economy, create new export opportunities and position Queensland as a significant player in the world market.
The industry already employs more than 19,000 people across the state and contributes significantly to the 8.2 billion dollars a year pharmaceuticals contributes to the national economy.
Queensland shares with Australia in being of the the 12 mega-diverse environments on Earth.
Up to 80 per cent of our marine and terrestrial species are found nowhere else on Earth.
Naturally our mega-diversity means mega opportunities for the development of new drugs and treatments to battle global scourges like cancer and Alzheimer's Disease.
Queensland is actively encouraging the exploration of this mega-diversity.
In 2003, the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Townsville signed the world's first screening agreement with the United States National Cancer Institute.
Drug discoveries made from our diverse marine life would benefit humanity everywhere.
There's no doubt Queensland offers a wide range of investment opportunities for national and international pharmaceuticals and therapeutic development partners.
From biodiscovery and clinical trials to the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and complementary medicines, we are constantly researching and innovating.
In the past seven years, the Queensland Government has invested more than 2.4 billion dollars in science research and innovation.
We are building some of the most significant facilities in the Southern hemisphere.
Five million dollars is being injected over the next five years into a local clinical trials network.
The Government has pledged over three million dollars to the Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence in Brisbane.
Last month, the Government released its Queensland Pharmaceuticals Action Plan.
It is about creating more jobs - in research and development and manufacturing - as well as attracting more pharmaceutical firms to Queensland and increasing Queensland's share of pharmaceutical exports
The Government has also set up a dedicated pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals sectoral development unit at the Department of State Development and Innovation.
It will work with the industry to identify opportunities for growth.
The state continues to attract major events such as the 8th World Congress on Clinical Phamacology and Therapeutics, which was held last August.
The Congress was a huge success and attracted around 1,000 scientists to Brisbane.
It is not lost on the industry that Queensland is one of Australia's lowest taxed states.
Plus we have very competitive set-up and operating costs and are located right next to rapidly growing markets in the Asia-Pacific region.
So, please talk to our scientists, business experts and dedicated representatives from the Queensland Government here at the conference, to learn more of what our Smart State has to offer your company.
In closing, I hope your deliberations during the conference will be mutually enriching.
I hope they also provide a focus and vision for your profession and your industry to move forward and go from strength to strength.
I wish you every success for your conference.
Thank you. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 12:00 AM
