The Parkwood Brothers Sharks Club on the Gold Coast will be the next site to undergo renovations performed by 12 local participants of a Skilling Queenslanders for Work project funded $156,211 by the Queensland Government.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the paid project work is an opportunity for participants to develop construction and landscaping skills and help to fill gaps in the labour market.

"This project is part of a larger plan to assist jobseekers over 12 months through job preparation activities and training pathway plans designed to meet participant employment needs on an individual level," Mr Mickel said.

"The overall project has been funded over $1.5 million with the view of helping 460 participants into further training or work."

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the project has received additional Community Renewal funding of $167,000 from the Department of Housing to cover the costs of materials.

"It's good to see a collaboration of government resources working to achieve mutual goals," Mr Lawlor said.

"Members of the community will enjoy the upgrade to a club which is utilised for events and sporting activities year round."

Career Employment Australia Inc. Manager Shane Cowan said the renovations will cover a range of work including carpentry, landscaping and painting.

"The club's change room, kitchen and referees room will undergo repairs that include floor and wall tiling, an interior and exterior paint job, timbers and roofing replacement, gutter repairs and general maintenance to fencing, seating and the drainage system," Mr Cowan said.

"Participants will also attain a safety induction Blue Card and undertake competencies from Certificate I in General Construction delivered by Wynnum Manly Employment & Training in partnership with Career Employment Australia."

During 2008/09 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 15,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government's $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
