Mr LAWLOR (Southport-ALP) (17/04/08) (6.10 pm):
Keebra Park State High School Awards Night 2007 showcased the amazing success of its students. The awards acknowledged some of the most successful young people in Queensland and, indeed, Australia. I know that it was a few months ago, but they still deserve recognition. Keebra Park is famous for its sporting prowess. However, its academic record is just as impressive.
Sally Barrett, the school captain, dux and student of the year, had an amazing year. Sally won the secondary school student category of the Queensland Smart Women-Smart State Award, a CSIRO Gold Crest award, first place in the Gold Coast Schools Science Competition, second place in the Queensland Science Competition, achieved a high distinction in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute National Chemistry Competition and a highly commended in the Courier-Mail Literary Competition for her feature article.
Shaun Williams from year 12 won second place in Australia in the Macquarie University School Science Awards for Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences, was awarded a CSIRO Gold Crest, gained second place in the Communicating Science category of the Gold Coast Science Competition and achieved third place in the Queensland Science Competition.
Morgen Bose in year 12 was named Queensland Young Scientist of the Year for 2007, was awarded a CSIRO Gold Crest and achieved first place in years 11 and 12 scientific investigations category of the Queensland Science Competition.
Stephanie Parsons from year 10 was awarded the Gold Coast Bulletin scholarship which sponsored her to attend a four-day learning excellence seminar at Bond University. Stephanie was also awarded a CSIRO Silver Crest, first place in the environmental projects category of the Gold Coast Schools Science Competition, first place in the year 10 scientific investigations category of the Queensland Science Competition, a high distinction in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute National Chemistry Quiz, a distinction in the Australian Maths Competition, and was the most outstanding achiever in year 10.
In the last seven years Keebra Park State High School students have been awarded 10 Gold Crest awards. In the history of the CSIRO Crest program only 38 Gold Crest awards have been awarded in total. This is a great science tradition and is a credit to the school and particularly to the legendary teacher, Robyn Zipf. Keebra Park was again awarded the best overall school award in the senior division of the Gold Coast Schools Science Competition. Keebra was the most awarded high school in Queensland in the senior divisions of the Courier-Mail Literary Competition. Keebra students ranked in the top 1 per cent of competitors in the Rio Tinto Big Science Competition, the International
Competition and Assessment for Schools in English, the Australian Maths Competition and the Australian Schools Computer Skills Competition. It was a great year for Keebra students. Congratulations to the teachers and staff and the dedicated and inspiring leadership of Fran Jones and also to the families who supported these wonderful students.
