Parents and carers of primary school children are being encouraged to walk with their youngsters to school on Friday 7 April for the annual Walk Safely to School day.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor encouraged mums, dads, carers and students to put their best foot forward and support the national day.

"Walking is healthy, safe and fun," Mr Lawlor said.

"If we can encourage more people to think twice before jumping into their cars, it's all the better for our environment and our health and fitness.

"The idea behind the national Walk Safely to School day is to get more parents and carers to walk to school with their primary school children and point out safe pedestrian behaviour.

"Make sure you show your child the safest way to school - and that's a route with less traffic and fewer roads to cross.

"Teach your child to look out for cars coming in and out of driveways and make sure they know the footpath's the safest place to walk.

"Teach them these simple rules: stop at the kerb, look right, look left, then look right again, listen for cars and think before crossing.

"If it's safe, it'll be enjoyable, and that's a big part of encouraging regular walking habits at an early age," Mr Lawlor said.

Parents and carers should plan the day's journey and allow plenty of time. Children should wear comfortable clothing and footwear for walking, put on some sunscreen and carry plenty of water.
