Mr LAWLOR (Southport-ALP) (5.50 pm): 2nd March 2006 (Hansard pg 539)
For 20 years I have heard of proposals to construct a hydrotherapy pool for the students at Kumbari Avenue State School. During that time teachers and parents have transported students by bus to various pools-a massive task considering many of these students are in wheelchairs. A half-hour swim could easily take up to three or four hours, getting children onto and off buses and so on. It therefore gave me great pleasure to attend the official opening of the school's newly completed hydrotherapy pool by the Premier, Peter Beattie, several weeks ago.
The pool is purpose built, enclosed and complete with hoists et cetera to cater for disabled students. This project was the dream of Paul Wrench and is named after his daughter Maddison, who died in 2002. The department of education and the Premier's department contributed to the cost of the pool. However, most of the credit must go to the Broadwater Southport Rotary Club and particularly John Westera, who was the project manager. John organised volunteer working bees and donation of materials, equipment and money. Included amongst the donations were the plans which were prepared by TJV Design. Paul Sinclair was the head contractor. Leisure Pools supplied the pool. Helcon supplied the heating equipment and Onga the pumping and filtration system. Paul Lingard Construction donated all the block work and labour to lay the blocks.Reinforcement steel was supplied by Newmann Steel and concrete by Newcon Concrete.
This long-awaited facility will greatly enhance the education experience of the students at the Kumbari Avenue State School and also make life a little easier for their families and teachers. In addition to those mentioned, I must also thank the acting principal of the school, Mike Warltier, and Lesley Englart, Val Brown and Phil Gray from the education department. However, as I said before, most of the credit must go to the Broadwater Southport Rotary Club.I again thank the club members for this magnificent facility.
