Families are set to reap the benefits after the Queensland Government allocated $22,000 worth of funding to the Labrador Playgroup for essential equipment and resources, Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor announced today.

The funding will dramatically benefit the education and services the playgroup provides to the local children of Labrador and the surrounding areas.

Mr Lawlor said the Queensland Government, through its Community Renewal program, was delighted to supply these funds to maximise the use of the Labrador Playgroup.

More support for parents was one of top issues that came out of Community Renewal's community consultation in Labrador.

"We want to break down social isolation among families in Labrador by providing a practical support network. Meeting other parents in the area, sharing experiences and worries in a friendly atmosphere helps to build confidence in parenting skills whilst providing a stimulating environment for the children," Mr Lawlor said.

Managed by the not-for-profit organisation Playgroup Australia, Labrador will deliver first-rate services to families at a very affordable cost."

"The funding will provide vital equipment such as tables, chairs and storage shelving and also books and playgroup items for a cheerful and welcoming playgroup."

The Labrador Playgroup is located at the rear of the Labrador Senior Citizens building opposite Harley Park. Up to eight playgroups will be run throughout the year, divided into two groups for children up to one year old, and children from one year to four years old.

The establishment of the playgroup will be made possible through the refurbishment of the rear of the Labrador Citizens building funded by Gold Coast City Council. Playgroup toys will be provided by Community Renewal and the Community Gambling Benefit Fund.

Community Renewal is a Queensland Government initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing. Renewal activities in the Gold Coast South zone are run in conjunction with local residents, the Gold Coast City Council and other government and non-government departments.

Since 1998, the Queensland Government has invested $74.5 million in renewal communities across Queensland.
