The rich history of Labrador will be celebrated with the installation of the Labrador Heritage Trail, Member for Southport Peter Lawlor announced today.
Mr Lawlor said $36,300 in funding from the Queensland Government's Community Renewal Program would help develop the Heritage Trail.
He said the trail would be delivered in partnership with Queensland Health and the Gold Coast City Council, and would identify and display areas of historical interest to visitors and local people.
"Heritage markers will be situated around the suburb, documenting a piece of local history on each one, while the walking trail will promote physical activity and use of local parks," he said.
Mr Lawlor said the Heritage Trail would encourage families to learn more about the area while walking the trail.
"Over the years the area has seen a lot of change and it is important for local people to stop and recognise where they have come from," he said.
"It is important to involve local residents in recognising the area's interesting history.
"Local residents have been heavily involved in the concept and will have a role in the final design," he said.
The Labrador Heritage Trail will include information on how far each marker is from the next, contributing to Queensland Health's 10,000 Steps program to encourage more physical activity.
This project is a joint initiative of the Department of Housing, through its Community Renewal program, Queensland Health and the Gold Coast City Council.
Community Renewal is a Queensland Government initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing. Renewal activities in Labrador are delivered in partnership with local residents, the Gold Coast City Council and other government and non-government agencies.
Since 1998, the State Government, through its Community Renewal program, has invested $84.7 million in renewal communities around Queensland.
