The Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, today officially opened this year's Neighbourhood Watch State Rally at the Shark's Australian Rules Football Club at Southport.
Mr Lawlor, representing the Minister for Police and Corrective Services, Judy Spence MP, said the theme of the rally is "Moving Forward"
"The rally is the largest annual gathering of members from around the State and the aim of the conference is to reach more people and to remain pro-active in the community," Mr Lawlor said.
"The community has an important role to play in crime prevention and through this rally hopefully Neighbourhood Watch operations around the state will be further strengthened."
Mr Lawlor said during the rally the outstanding achievements of Neighbourhood Watch members, especially among young people and multicultural communities were recognised.
"The Neighbourhood Watch Program began in 1988 in Queensland and the very first neighbourhood watch group was started on the Gold Coast in the Isle of Capri and Sorrento area," Mr Lawlor said.
"Crime prevention is a whole of community responsibility - it is not something the Queensland Police Service or the Queensland Government can do alone.
"That is why community based crime prevention programs such as Neighbourhood Watch are as relevant today as ever." The rally - attended by more than 300 people from around Queensland - featured workshops for the delegates and members.
There are approximately 685 active Neighbourhood Watch areas in Queensland, including 59 in the Gold Coast region.
