Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today encouraged local community groups to get their entries in for a share of $750,000 funding for festivals, events and projects available through the government's Multicultural Assistance Program (MAP) this year.
Mr Lawlor said the closing date for applications was this Friday 29 July.
"The Beattie Government has now delivered the second instalment of a $3 million, three-year increase to the budget of MAP, with an 85% increase in the amount available for festivals, events and projects," he said.
"We've increased the number of community workers that we support throughout the state from 7 to 20 and continue to provide funding for 16 multicultural support workers based with local councils and the Local Government Association of Queensland.
"Multicultural Assistance Program funding supports innovative and successful community initiatives and this year smaller communities are encouraged to apply for $3,000 grants to promote their culture and heritage."
Mr Lawlor said Queensland communities continued to devote a huge amount of time and effort to celebrating and supporting cultural diversity.
"Our productivity and global competitiveness are enhanced by having hundreds of different cultural groups call Queensland home," he said.
"Our linguistic, cultural and religious diversity enhances our international connections and capabilities in trade, business and industry, as well as community engagement."
Mr Lawlor said multiculturalism was an essential element of the government's Smart Queensland - Smart State Strategy 2005-2015.
"Our partnerships with Queensland communities, forged through the MAP grants and our funded workers set the scene for best practice in multicultural policy and program development," he said.
