Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today encouraged local entries in the 2005 Premier's Multicultural Photographic Awards.

Mr Lawlor said nominations in the awards, which offer more than $25,000 in cash and photographic equipment prizes, were now open and would close on Friday, 12 August 2005.

"I encourage all local resident professional and non-professional photographers to enter, particularly our local students," he said.

"Last year's inaugural competition uncovered a wealth of photographic talent as well as 251 fantastic images celebrating our wonderful cultural diversity.

"The theme of this year's awards is Diversity at Work."

Mr Lawlor said the winner of the open award would receive $15,000 and $5,000 would go to the highly-commended entrant.

"The school students' category offers $3,000 to the winner and $2,000 to the highly-commended entrant," he said.

"Queenslanders will be able to choose their favourite photograph, with the winner of the People's Choice award receiving photographic equipment."

Entry to the 2005 Premier's Multicultural Photographic Awards is free and photos must:

  • reflect or be inspired by multiculturalism in Queensland
  • be taken in Queensland by a Queensland resident
  • be in black and white or colour
  • be taken on film or transparency or digitally
  • not be computer generated
  • be a single moment in time.
The photos will be judged by panels comprised of community leaders and photography and art professionals and academics.

Mr Lawlor said a shortlist of 20 photos would be exhibited at the Queensland Multicultural Festival on Sunday, 2 October at Roma Street Parkland.

"Queenslanders will be able to vote for the People's Choice from the festival display and an online voting system will enable everyone, no matter where they live, to nominate their favourite entry," he said.

"The winners will be announced at a ceremony in November."

Terms and conditions of the awards are available at www.photographicawards.qld.gov.au or by contacting (07) 3405 5215. All entries will need to accord with the terms and conditions.
