The Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor is encouraging local community groups to apply for a share of $750,000 funding for festivals, events and projects available through the Beattie Government's Multicultural Assistance Program (MAP) this year.

Mr Lawlor today said the grants round had opened on 1 May and applications would close on 29 July.

"The Beattie Government has now delivered the second instalment of a $3 million, three-year increase to the budget of MAP, with an 85% increase in the amount available for festivals, events and projects," he said.

"This funding supports innovative and successful community initiatives and this year smaller communities are encouraged to apply for $3,000 grants to promote their culture and heritage."

Mr Lawlor said assistance was also available for groups to help them fill out the application forms, through a government funded Grants Access Worker at the Multicultural Development Association.

"Groups can contact the worker, Susan Shehata, on 07 3394 9307," he said.

Mr Lawlor said multiculturalism was an essential element of the government's Smart Queensland - Smart State Strategy 2005 - 2015, so government partnerships with Queensland communities, forged through the MAP grants and funded workers help ensure we establish best practice in multicultural policy and programs.

"The number of multicultural community workers has increased from 7 to 19 and we continue to provide funding for 16 multicultural support workers based with local councils and the Local Government Association of Queensland," he said.

A comprehensive Multicultural Assistance Program Grants Guidelines and Application booklet is available at www.premiers.qld.gov.au/multicultural or in hard copy by telephoning the Grants Administrator 1800 053 739 (for callers outside Brisbane) or 3224 5690.
