A number of recent high profile searches have again highlighted the importance of State Emergency Services (SES) volunteers in the local community.
Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor said SES volunteers played a vital role in the search for Columbian businessman Ricardo Sirutis on Moreton Island, and again over the past few days looking for Tasmanian tourist Anthony Roden on the Gold Coast.
"Both of these searches were yet another reminder of the incredible work SES volunteers provide in our community," Mr Lawlor said.
Mr Lawlor said the SES is an essential service provided by a team of dedicated volunteers all over Queensland and encouraged interested locals to get involved in this valuable organisation.
"The SES is always on the lookout for new members, so if you've thought about it before but never taken the plunge, now is a great time to join," he said.
"Every day of the year, SES volunteers are ready to respond to their community's requests for assistance."
Mr Lawlor said volunteers prepare for and respond to a wide range of disasters and emergency situations.
"Be it assisting the Queensland Fire & Rescue Service and Rural Fire Service with fire fighting, conducting storm clean up operations, assisting Queensland Police Service with land and forensic searches, or even traffic control, they're always there to lend a hand.
"On top of that, SES volunteers attend weekly training, and even the occasional weekend training course, on a variety of areas.
"I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the SES volunteers in our local area who are always ready to lend a hand."
Mr Lawlor encouraged local residents who are interested in joining to contact the local SES Unit.
SES numbers are listed under State Emergency Service or local Councils in the White Pages phone directory, or for further information on the SES, go to www.emergency.qld.gov.au/ses. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 1:44 PM
