Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today hailed Premier Peter Beattie's mini Budget health boost and its benefits for the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast will share in a massive $6.36 billion announced by Mr Beattie in Queensland Parliament this afternoon.

Mr Lawlor said the region will benefit from millions of dollars spent on the enhancement of a range of health services over the next 5½ years, including emergency departments, cancer care and cardiac responses.

"This is a substantial funding injection for Queensland's health services and one that will continue the Beattie Government's commitment to deliver the best public health system in Australia," Mr Lawlor said.

"I'm extremely pleased to say the Gold Coast will receive a range of benefits as a result of this announcement.

"This mini Budget continues the financial boost delivered to the Gold Coast's public health services in the 2005-06 State Budget handed down in June."

Specific funding announced in the mini Budget for the Gold Coast includes:

  • $23.52 million for cancer services including $170,000 in 2005-06.
  • $34.99 million for additional intensive care beds including $5.15 million in 2005-05 ($1.37 million already announced).
  • $62.53 million in funding for emergency departments including $5.48 million in 2005-06 ($4.96 million already announced).
  • $4.8 million for additional elective surgery including $800,000 in 2005-06.
  • $1.32 million for cardiac services including $220,000 in 2005-06.
  • $14.88 million for mental health services including $1 million in 2005-06.
  • $9.9 million to target priority health service pressures in the region including $1.65 million in 2005-06.
Over the next 5½ years, the district will also share in:

  • $127 million to be provided across the state for development and training for our doctors, nurses and allied health workforce and additional specialist training places.
  • $7.53 million to be allocated to capital projects supporting the introduction of new cardiac, cancer and renal services in 2006-06 including $3.2 million to relocate office space and develop a Cardiac Ward at the Gold Coast.
  • Further funding which will be targeted to health services based on a Statewide Health Services Plan to be developed in 2006. This funding amounts to $500 million including $50.6 million in 2006-07.
Mr Lawlor said the mini Budget's funding boost follows on the heels of the Beattie Government's commitment to spend $11.5 million to relieve immediate pressures on the Gold Coast's health services.
