State Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor presented the Southport Croquet Club with a cheque for $12,898 on Saturday from the Queensland Government's Gambling Community Benefit Fund.
The club scored the funding for the purchase of new croquet equipment, including shades, blinds and balls, and for the upgrade of the club's lawns.
Mr Lawlor said the club is the Gambling Community Benefit Fund is an important source of funding for community groups such as the Southport Croquet Club.
"The grants benefit a variety of local organisations by enhancing their capacity to provide services, leisure activities and opportunities to Queenslanders in their local communities," Mr Lawlor said.
"The Southport Croquet Club is a very worthy recipient of this funding."
Croquet is first thought to have been played in Southport in the early 1940s on the site now occupied by Australia Fair West, however play was disbanded during World War II.
In 1948, Mrs Florence Woodroffe, whose husband worked for The Gold Coast Bulletin, advertised a meeting of women who might be interested in playing croquet.
The response was good, enabling them to obtain land from the Council on a site that had previously been swampland.
This is now known as Queen's Park and is the present site of the club.
Mr Lawlor said the club is a particular highlight in Southport.
"To see this kind of establishment prospering in Southport, despite the substantial development taking place around it, is testimony to the hard work and dedication of its members."
On Australia Day this year, Mr Lawlor presented the club with a brand new flag to fly from the club's new flagpole that was also purchased with a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant.
Community groups in the Southport electorate have shared in more than $2.35 million from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund since Mr Lawlor's election in 2001. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 10:48 AM
