Lawlor highlights awareness during Prostate Cancer Month

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today highlighted the need for local males to be aware of the danger of prostate cancer, in light of September being Prostate Cancer Month.

Mr Lawlor said Prostate Cancer Month was a perfect opportunity for men to seek advice about this important health issue.

"Seeking medical advice has always been a problem for the average male," Mr Lawlor said.

"However, it is a sad reality that thousands of Queenslanders are diagnosed each year with some form of cancer."

Mr Lawlor said prostate cancer is the second-most common form of cancer in males, behind skin cancer.

"Men are generally happy to have potential skin cancers checked, but checking prostate cancer is another matter," he said.

"Reluctance to have an examination and fear of diagnosis seem to be contributing factors as to why the issue is avoided."

Mr Lawlor said prostate cancer is primarily a disease that affects older males and is seldom found in men who are less than 50 years of age.

"For males over 50, it is sensible to have a yearly examination by a doctor," he said.

"Any form of cancer can be potentially life threatening, so it is better to be safe than sorry.

"I encourage every man over 40 to take the opportunity to contact their doctor for a check-up."
