Lawlor on fitness kick for charity

STATE Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, is putting his money where his mouth is for charity.

The generously proportioned pollie has embarked on a new years fitness kick, vowing to personally donate $100 to local charity Food Aid for every kilogram he can lose between New Year's Day and polling night of the 2004 State Election - whenever that may be.

He has sworn off the beer, is watching what he eats and is leaving the car keys behind 'if walking is a credible option'.

" I've already lost two kilograms because of the sweltering weather we've been having and I reckon there'll be a few more coming off as I continue my doorknocking," Mr Lawlor said.

" Food Aid is a great Southport charity.

" They are based underneath the Mal Burke Carpark and provide food parcels to people who might be doing it tough.

" Pastor Brad Otto and the volunteers do a great job year in, year out and, to be perfectly honest, I couldn't find a more appropriate group to support," he said.

And to ensure all is above board, Mr Lawlor has agreed to regular 'weigh-ins' on the scales in the jockey's room at the Gold Coast Turf Club, the first of which he'll do under the watchful eyes of stweards at tomorrow's Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions feature raceday (Saturday 10th January).

" Going off the grog during Magic Millions, and not knowing exactly when the State Election will be is a big punt, but if Food Aid makes a few bob and I get an unobstructed view of my toes again, I'll be happy," Mr Lawlor said.
