State Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, raised the flag on a new flagpole for the first time at the Southport Croquet Club in a special Australia Day ceremony, today.
Mr Lawlor presented the Club with the flag, after it purchased the new flagpole with their funding grant from the September 2004 round of the State Government's popular Gambling Community Benefit Fund.
Mr Lawlor said the Club is a remarkable establishment that has continued to prosper at its Queen Street location, despite the immense development taking place around it.
"The Southport Croquet Club is something of an anomaly in this region of Southport," Mr Lawlor said.
"That it has continued to thrive amid the development taking place around it is testimony to the outstanding work of the Club and its members."
Croquet is first thought to be played in Southport in the early 1940s on the site now occupied by Australia Fair West, however play was disbanded during World War II.
In 1948, Mrs Florence Woodroffe, whose husband worked for The Gold Coast Bulletin, advertised a meeting of women who might be interested in playing croquet.
The response was good, enabling them to obtain land from the Council on a site that had previously been swampland.
This is now known as Queen's Park and is the present site of the Club.
According to Club President, Judith Gwilliam, the Club continually welcomes new members to join.
"This is a terrific sport, for both young and old," she said.
Later this year, the Club will host the prestigious 4th Division Queensland Croquet Championship Medals.
Community organisations in the Southport electorate have shared in more than $1.8 million from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund since Mr Lawlor's election in 2001. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 11:00 PM
