Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today panned the decision by Telstra management to force the staff of its Bundall Zenith Call Centre to work this Friday's Gold Coast Show Holiday.
Mr Lawlor said the decision was needlessly uncaring towards Telstra employees.
"The Gold Coast Show Holiday is a significant day on the local calendar and Telstra employees deserve to enjoy it as much as everybody else," Mr Lawlor said.
"These hardworking employees are keeping Telstra profitable, yet, unlike most Gold Coast workers, they are being denied this traditional day-off."
Mr Lawlor said the decision was a sign of things to come under the Federal Government's planned industrial relations changes.
"With Mr Howard's proposed tough-on-workers IR laws and the full sale of Telstra yet to even proceed, Bundall's call centre employees are already facing cuts in their working conditions," he said.
Mr Lawlor said he had been advised Telstra has the capacity to call for volunteers and to have other call centres cover for the Bundall Zenith Call Centre, as has been the case in previous years.
"I've been told Telstra could provide adequate service on Friday, as they have done in the past, but instead workers are missing out on this important community event," he said.
"I call on the area's Federal representative, Member for Moncrieff, Mr Steven Ciobo to use his influence to have this unfair decision quashed." Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 10:31 AM
