Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, has signalled his intention to continue lobbying the State Government to fast-track improvements to Southport Station.
"I visited the site with Police Minister, Tony McGrady, last week, so that he could see first hand the requirements of this station," Mr Lawlor said.
"I intend to take this fight all the way to the Minister's office and following our visit, I have arranged to meet with him to discuss this important policing issue during the next parliamentary sittings.
"The Government has shown its commitment to this project by providing $100,000 in this year's budget to progress the refurbishment of the Southport Police Station. But we need this project to be a priority, as it is vital for not only Southport, but the Gold Coast as a whole.
"The upgrade will provide a modern facility to serve the northern end of the Gold Coast into the future."
Mr Lawlor said policing and community safety was a key issue on the Gold Coast and he was determined to fight for the best deal for the community.
"Since coming to government in July 1998, the number of funded police in the Gold Coast Police District has increased by 145 officers from 503 in July 1998 to 648 as at 1st October this year, including an extra 87 officers since February 2001.
"The good news is these increases to police numbers are set to continue.
"This financial year about 300 extra officers will be employed thanks to funding provided by the government.
"In fact, each year we have been in Government we increased police by about this figure and as these police numbers show, we are getting our fair share of these here on the Gold Coast."
