Member for Southport Peter Lawlor today urged Gold Coast women to take advantage of free breast screening for women aged 40 years and over.

Mr Lawlor said BreastScreen Queensland's free mammogram service was crucial for the early detection of breast cancer in women.

"Recent negative media reports about BreastScreen should not discourage local women from having regular screens," Mr Lawlor said.

"BreastScreen Queensland picks up 9 out of 10 breast cancers present at the time of screening.

"The service plays a vital role in getting women diagnosed early and is helping to save and prolong lives.

"Early detection of breast cancer through improved breast screening and improvements in treatment are helping to ensure more women are now surviving breast cancer."

Mr Lawlor said it was recommended that women aged between 50 and 69 are screened every two years. Breast cancer is still the most common cause of death among Queensland women," he said.

"Last year, BreastScreen Queensland detected 1,115 new cases of breast cancer in Queensland."

Mr Lawlor said free breast cancer screening was available at 240 locations across the state, the service is free and a doctor's referral is not needed," he said.

"Women on the Gold Coast can access the screening and assessment service at 60 High Street, Southport or at Treetops Plaza Shopping Centre, West Burleigh."

Mobile services also include:

• Robina Town Centre Shopping Centre (until 3 August);
• Beenleigh Community Health Centre (14 August - 12 October); and
• Mt Warren Park, (10 - 18 October).

Mr Lawlor said women should call 13 20 50 to arrange an appointment for a free breast screen.
