Another successful Fire Awareness Week has just finished, and Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today urged local residents to keep fire safety in mind all year round.
Mr Lawlor said residents need to think about how prepared they would be in event of a house or bushfire, and to make sure their fire safety is up to scratch.
"Some relatively simple and inexpensive fire safety measures in the home can save a lot of heartache in the long run," Mr Lawlor said.
"Fire prevention and safety may not seem like a priority until you're watching firefighters battle to save your home, or worse, when you and your family are trying to get out of that burning home.
"The number one rule is that every home should have a properly maintained smoke alarm to provide a basic level of protection.
"But the best form of protection is prevention - its very simple to reduce the risks around your home - some examples are ensuring electrical goods are well maintained and are switched off after use, and that powerpoints are not overloaded."
Mr Lawlor said other areas of consideration were the kitchen, and ensuring cooking is not left unattended, and making sure that heaters, candles, incense and the like are positioned safely and watched carefully, especially when small children and pets are around.
"And don't forget the outside of the home, poorly maintained yards, rubbish piles, and careless storage of flammable items can make your home vulnerable, and particularly so during the grass and bushfire season," he said said.
"Let's all do our bit to help firefighters keep us safe, all year round." Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 10:01 AM
