STATE Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, has backed the Beattie Government's commitment to building a Gold Coast Cruise Ship Terminal, provided the proposal meets with environmental and engineering requirements.
The life-long campaigner for Broadwater protection said today he had been 'buoyed' by the State government's rejection of Wavebreak Island and inner-Broadwater as terminal options.
"I've lobbied the Minister heavily for balanced development and I'm confident that the State Government's commitment to not building on Wavebreak Island, the Broadwater and the western foreshores will be honoured," Mr Lawlor said.
"Anything inside the Broadwater proper certainly would not have my support.
"There are fors and againsts with most major infrastructure developments, but at the end of day, I don't just want the best outcome for the people of the Gold Coast.
" I want an outcome that's economically, socially and above all, environmentally viable," he said.
Late last week, Minister for State Development and Innovation Tony McGrady, said the terminal would be a shot-in-the-arm for tourism on the Gold Coast.
"I am confident that a decision could be made by the end of the year," he said.
"A world-class cruise ship facility would provide jobs and tourism dollars to the Gold Coast, but as with all large scale projects, we have to ensure that we get the location and the numbers right.
"There are certain areas we will not consider for a terminal - we've made a commitment to the people of the Gold Coast that we would not build this project on Wavebreak Island, the Broadwater and the western foreshores.
"Any proposal has to be carefully evaluated to ensure that these issues are addressed," he said.
