Southport motorists will share in millions of dollars in red light and speed camera fines under the Beattie Government's Safer Roads Sooner program, Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said today.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Paul Lucas, said more than $46 million dollars statewide would be funnelled into road safety projects to help lower Queensland's road toll.
"Nearly $34 million of the $46 million we are investing in smart road safety projects comes from fines collected from motorists who've been caught by red light or speed cameras.
Mr Lawlor has welcomed the announcement that an additional 77 high priority projects have been approved for 2008-09 by the Safer Roads Sooner Advisory Committee headed by Parliamentary Secretary for Main Roads Andrew McNamara.
"With Safer Roads Sooner the primary focus is projects with potential to reduce the state's road toll.
"The committee has targeted projects which will make the biggest impact on road safety," Mr McNamara said.
Southport will receive $600,000 under the Safer Road Sooner program for intersection improvements on the Gold Coast Highway / North Street. Works will include modifying signals and extending the southbound right-turn lane.
$250,000 will be allocated for intersection improvements for the Gold Coast Highway / Arundel Drive which involves installing non-skid pavement, extending the right-turn lane and modifying signals for right-hand turns.
$150,000 for intersection improvements for Southport-Burleigh Road/ Benowa Road - installing non-skid treatment for both approaches of Southport-Burleigh Road.
"This is about improving our local roads and playing our part in helping to drive down the state's road toll." Mr Lawlor said.
In all, a total of 261 projects have been made possible by the Beattie Government's Safer Road Sooner program since beginning in 2005. Professor Mary Sheehan from Queensland University of Technology's accident research group, CARRS-Q and the RACQ are among the committee's panel of road safety experts and key project decision makers.
Mr Lucas said the Safer Roads Sooner strategy aims to reduce Queensland's road toll through smart targeted investment in better road infrastructure.
"From guard rails and traffic lights, to overtaking lanes and fatigue zone warning signs, these are the projects the Safer Roads Sooner Committee believes will make a real difference to our road toll," Mr Lucas said.
"We're pulling out all stops to save lives and minimise life changing injuries by improving roads with a serious crash history.
"It's a sound investment in the state's future.
