Mr LAWLOR (Southport-ALP) (10.28 am): On 30 March the Courier-Mail carried an article by Senator George Brandis entitled 'Out of division unity is born'. The article claimed that peace and harmony had broken out in the Liberal Party in Queensland, that factionalism is finished and that there has been the 'healing power of time'. Within a couple of days, a second story appeared highlighting factional warfare in the seat of Ryan. That story was clearly sourced from Michael Johnson and aimed at his factional opponents. Last week the Gold Coast Bulletin detailed rampant factional branch stacking on the Gold Coast, mainly through the Young Liberals as is happening in New South Wales. One of the targets is the federal member for McPherson, Margaret May, who is a decent and hardworking representative who has obviously fallen out with her own faction.
However, the real confirmation of how fraudulent the article by Senator Brandis was lies not in who attended the meeting that Senator Brandis claimed proved that there was 'peace in our time' but who did not attend. Senator Brandis was there, but only because his factional leader, Mr Bob Carroll, the former Liberal state president, was absolutely banned from attending by the ruling Santoro/Caltabiano faction which the Carroll group broke away from last year. So much for peace and harmony breaking out in the Liberal Party! One of the key factional players is banned from the peace talks in retribution for ratting on the ruling faction, and branch stacking and paybacks are as rampant as ever. If I were Margaret May, I would be watching my back. The indications are that there would be no white smoke for her after the next McPherson preselection. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 12:00 AM
