Two Gold Coast teachers have been recognised for innovative Information Communication Technology (ICT) teaching practices in the annual Smart Classrooms Teacher Awards.
Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, said David Green from Arundel State School and Rosalie Everest from the Queensland Academy for Health Sciences were among 12 Queensland teachers to share $60,000 in industry-sponsored professional development. "Nominated teachers had to apply for the award through a digital portfolio demonstrating how they make ICT integral to teaching and learning and improve student outcomes," Mr Lawlor said.
"Special education teacher, David, incorporates games and digital storytelling in online content developed for students with disabilities, while Rosalie, an English teacher, uses Learning Place project rooms for editing and peer and teacher feedback on creative writing."
"The number and quality of nominations this year reflected a significant step up in ICT practice in our schools where hundreds of teachers are embedding ICT into the way they teach their subjects.
"There were 172 nominations, resulting in 92 applications, with 12 teachers selected.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the State Government was a recognised world leader in digital education through its support for teachers to help them integrate technology into the curriculum.
"In the 2008-09 State Budget more than $100 million was allocated for further Smart Classrooms initiatives to improve student, teacher and parent access to learning materials anywhere, any time," Mr Welford said.
The award winners were announced at the Brisbane Powerhouse this evening.
Winners will attend the eLearning Innovation Expo tomorrow (19 August) and specifically tailored professional development Master Classes on 20 and 21 August.
The winning teachers each receive professional development in their field. The industry sponsors are Adobe, Blackboard, Cisco, Citec, Computer Corp, Data 3, Direct National, IBM, Microsoft, Oakton, Videopro and WebCentral.
