LOCAL community groups will share in more than $128,000 in State Government grants under the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, the Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, said today.

Mr Lawlor said the Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants would contribute towards making a difference in the lives of people in the local area.

" These grants help sustain the energy and commitment of our not-for-profit community groups so they can continue their great work in delivering services and activities in our community," he said.

"The Fund's September round will distribute more than $8.2 Million to 568 community and sporting groups across Queensland."

Local grant recipients are:

• Australian Red Cross - Gold Coast / Hinterland Region $10,000
• Food Aid Inc $13,655
• Gold Coast Athletics Club Inc $30,000
• Gold Coast Multicultural Arts Group in Collaboration Inc $10,000
• Mental Health Association (QLD) - Gold Coast $ 2,705
• Queens Cricket Club Inc $29,328
• Residential Tenants Association Inc $ 7,514
• Salvation Army - Southport $13,514
• Set Free Ministries (Australia) Ltd $11,451

Since the Gambling Community Benefit Fund began in 1994, it has distributed grants totalling more than $215 Million to help more than 22,500 community services and projects.

" For many not-for-profit groups the Fund is an indispensable financial resource, helping them achieve their goals," Mr Lawlor said.

"It is generated from a levy placed on Golden Casket lotteries, wagering, keno and gaming machines throughout the State.

"The Fund is unique to Queensland and its aim of redistributing gambling funds ensures that the community benefits from gambling in Queensland."
