Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today urged local residents to consider joining their Local Ambulance Committee (LAC), as Ambulance Week 2005 commences.

"Right across Queensland, Local Ambulance Committees provide vital back-up for our paramedics," Mr Lawlor said.

"The Queensland Ambulance Service is highly regarded for its world-class service, which is built on the support of Local Ambulance Committees throughout the state.

"There are 177 LACs in Queensland and they are just vital to the people of this state.

"LACs play a fundamental role through organising fundraising activities, enhancing community liaison and promoting community awareness of ambulance services."

Minister for Emergency Services, Pat Purcell said LACs provided vital advice, support and local knowledge to the Queensland Ambulance Service and enhanced the capacity of the QAS to form partnerships with the community.

"Ambulance Week is an opportunity to thank our paramedics for their efforts, and it's also a great chance to recognise the support provided by the hardworking members of the LACs."

Anyone interested in assisting with the promotion and advancement of ambulance services in their local area should contact the Local Ambulance Committee Coordination Unit on (07) 3247 8287, or for more information visit www.ambulance.qld.gov.au.
