Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today announced the Loder Creek Bridge would be replaced as part of the proposed upgrade of the Gold Coast Highway.

The Department of Main Roads is currently finalising concept planning for the upgrade, which is scheduled to begin construction next year.

Mr Lawlor said he had received numerous enquiries regarding the Loder Creek Bridge during the past 12 months, particularly following the June 2005 floods.

"A number of residents have been concerned about the damming effect the existing bridge has during heavy rain," Mr Lawlor said.

"I have been in contact with the Department of Main Roads since the issue was first raised and am pleased the existing bridge will be replaced as part of the forthcoming Gold Coast Highway upgrade."

Mr Lawlor said the current upgrade concept plans would also see a second bridge constructed as part of the duplication of the Stevens Street to Robert Street section of the Gold Coast Highway.

"The second bridge is planned to be constructed downstream of the current bridge," he said.

Mr Lawlor said the Gold Coast City Council had agreed to contribute to the additional cost for the construction of the new bridge.

"I am particularly thankful to Mayor Ron Clarke for his assistance in this matter," Mr Lawlor said.

The Department of Main Roads is planning to commence construction on the Stevens Street to Robert Street portion of the Gold Coast Highway upgrade (including the Loder Creek Bridge duplication) in 2006.
