A LOCAL community group will use a $2480 grant to hold a catchment awareness day to raise awareness of natural resources in the Broadwater area, State Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said today.

Mr Lawlor said the Loders Creek Catchment Association, in partnership with Biggera Creek Care Group, Gold Coast City Council and the Wildlife Preservation Society, would use their grant to hold a Broadwater Catchment Awareness Day during Queensland Resources Week.

"Participants in the day's activities will learn about the value of Loders and Biggera creeks and their impact on southern Moreton Bay, and about the volunteer work done by catchment groups to look after the creeks," he said.

Mr Lawlor said the Loders Creek Catchment Association was a worthy recipient of the grant.

"Caring for our natural resources is everyone's business, and this is a great opportunity to involve the local community in looking after this fantastic area," he said.

Mr Lawlor said up to $100,000 in Community Natural Resources Awareness Activity Grants was being awarded to 40 community groups across Queensland as a way of strengthening the community's awareness and involvement in natural resource management.

"Grants are being given to projects that are innovative and creative, and that have an entertainment, educational or cultural approach to natural resource management.

"The projects and activities will be the focus of Queensland Resources Week next year from May 23 to 30."

Mr Lawlor said Queensland Resources Week celebrates the importance of the State's land, water vegetation, mineral and petroleum assets in our daily lives.

"Providing grants to community groups to do projects and activities during Queensland Resources Week will ensure the community has ownership of the event," he said.

Landcare and catchment management groups were invited to apply for the grants to develop projects and activities in partnership with community, school, youth or business groups, or local government.

A panel of judges, including Queensland Farmers Federation executive director Brianna Casey and Queensland's Landcare Australia Limited representative Mary Lou Gittins, evaluated more than 100 applications for the 40 available grants.

Activities and projects funded through the grants scheme range from field days and fun days to designing postcards and murals.
