With more than 700,000 Queensland kids heading back to school I am urging motorists to slow down around schools, and parents to teach their children road safety.
Motorists should be aware the start of the new school year meant kids would be out-and-about, and 40kmh school zones would be back in operation.
Young children aren't able to judge speed and distance, and their lack of experience may mean they simply forget to look out for cars. Also, in many cases, a child's height limits their ability to see over parked cars or to be seen by motorists.
Sticking to the slower speed limit helps motorists prepare for the unexpected.
It's also vital for parents to do everything they can to keep their kids safe including teaching them the basics of road safety, and making sure children know the safest route to get to school.
One school-aged child had died and 39 had been hospitalised in accidents in Queensland school zones since 2001.
Queensland Transport's Look Out, There are Children About advertising campaign was designed to remind motorists, parents and kids themselves about staying safe.
It only takes two seconds for a child to run from the curb to the centre of the road. A car travelling at 40 km/hr can stop more than 11 metres sooner than one travelling at 60kmh.
Many schools have passenger set down areas to drop off and pick up children and I urge parents to utilise these areas rather than park illegally.
Teach children to cross at traffic lights when the green 'walk' sign is showing, at pedestrian crossings when vehicles have stopped, and at supervised school crossings when the supervisor has signalled it is safe to do so.
We need to work together to ensure our children travel to and from school in a safe environment and ensure they are able to do so safely.
