The second annual Queensland Resources Week, celebrating the importance of Queensland's land, water, vegetation, and mineral resources, was a chance for all Queenslanders to get involved in community natural resource activities, Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Minister Stephen Robertson told State Parliament today.

Mr Robertson said the week, which runs from 22-30 May, highlighted the importance of all Queensland's resources and encouraged people to become more connected with resource management in their local communities.

"Our land, water, vegetation, and mineral resources are among our most precious assets: the support economic stability and growth; they form the basis of our unique natural heritage; and they underpin the enviable quality of life enjoyed by Queenslanders," he said.

"It is up to all of us to help better manage our resources today and for the future - and the first step is understanding the balance that needs to be maintained between development and protection, landscape and lifestyle."

"The theme for Queensland Resources Week this year is 'Our Resources, Our Future, Our State: Get Involved,' which reflects the importance the entire community joining together to look after our resources."

Mr Robertson said the week would focus strongly on the role played by young people in caring for Queensland's natural heritage.

"Children are the future natural resource managers of this State, and we can help prepare them for that future by encouraging them to get involved now," he said.

"Queensland needs informed, active young resource managers, both to enter professional roles and to join the army of Queensland volunteers who give up their free time to care for our natural resources."

Mr Robertson said Queensland Resources Week had this year been boosted by Queensland Government Community Awareness Grants, worth a total of $100,000, which were awarded to projects that raised awareness of natural resource issues and built partnerships in their local communities.

"During Queensland Resources Week, grant recipients will hold a total of 39 community activities throughout Queensland, with activities including making chocolate dragons at Mt Tyson, a pantomime at Pine Rivers, and range of other field days, workshops, and community fun days."

Mr Robertson will officially launch Queensland Resources Week tomorrow (Friday) at Calamvale Community College in Brisbane's south.
