When Ambulance Week 2005 kicks off on Monday 12 September, Southport Ambulance Station will have two good reasons to celebrate, as new paramedics Paul Grey and Ciranoush Aird start their first shifts.

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor welcomed Paul and Ciranoush, as part of a group of 18 new student paramedics hitting the road for the first time today.

"These student paramedics have just completed their first six week block of tutorial based classes, and they will now join Southport paramedics for ten months of on-road training," Mr Lawlor said.

"During their initial training period they have completed some of the world's most advanced clinical training, learning skills in defibrillation, injury and extensive trauma treatment, and medication administration under the supervision of Advanced and Intensive Care Paramedics.

"The paramedics at Southport will also welcome their new colleagues, as their training in the latest emergency medical techniques makes them valuable members of the team.

"The training these student paramedics receive is second to none."

Emergency Services Minister, Pat Purcell said the 18 new paramedics were part of the $35.9 million Beattie Government commitment of an extra 240 paramedics over three years.

"This is the next wave of the extra paramedics who will be trained this financial year, and they are part of the commitment of an additional 350 paramedics over a total four year period," he said.

"Paramedics are revered in our local communities as life savers and I know this latest group of paramedics will be warmly welcomed."
