Good afternoon.

It is a pleasure to be here today representing Employment, Training and Industrial Relations Minister Tom Barton.

Tom regrets he could not attend but he has asked me to pass on his congratulations and best wishes.

The Beattie Government established special programs under its Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative to help tackle the problem of mature-age unemployment,

This program, managed by the National Retail Association, follows a successful partnership between the association and the Queensland Government which started in 2003.

To date, 642 people - including the 16 who took part in this project - have been helped to develop new skills, new hope and new careers.

Mature-age jobseekers have life experience which is particularly valuable to the retailing industry, and that industry is expanding, so there are more job opportunities.

As part of this program, the National Retail Association runs four-week courses - three weeks of training covering literacy and numeracy assessments, life skills and accredited retail training, plus one week's work experience.

Participants also receive job-search training and on-going coaching and are able to focus on specific industry sectors, like small electrical, hardware, bakery, fashion and books.

The work experience component of the program often nets participants a job because employers see jobseekers at work and know what they are capable of.

Today's graduates have received work experience at:

• Myer, Pacific Fair
• Repco Auto Paints
• Bunnings, West Burleigh
• Noni B, Runaway Bay
• Millers, Australia Fair
• Howard Storage World
• David Jones, Robina
• Warner Village Theme Parks, and
• Big W, Runaway Bay.

The support of those retailers is greatly appreciated.

Previous programs had good employment outcomes - so there's no reason not to be optimistic for today's graduates who are just finishing their work experience.

Congratulations to the National Retail Association for their coordination of this worthwhile project.

And to the participants - I wish you great success in your new careers.

The retail sector offers many opportunities for ongoing employment. Thanks to this project, you now have the skills to make the most of these opportunities.

Well done, everyone!
