Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, today congratulated five new apprentices from the Gold Coast region who have secured a job with the state government.

They are among 101 new apprentices and trainees taken on this year across Queensland by QBuild, a business unit of the Department of Public Works.

Successful applicants in the Gold Coast region are Chris Bakker of Mt Tamborine (carpentry),Shannon Beagan of Biggera Waters(carpentry), Dean Clements of Labrador(carpentry),and Craig Smith of Palm Beach (electromechanic).

Shaun Armstrong of Currumbin has been appointed to a school-based apprenticeship in carpentry located at Beenleigh.

"These young Queenslanders had to beat tough competition to secure their trade training positions," Mr Lawlor said.

"More than 1,500 applications for trade apprenticeships were received from across Queensland - a 50 percent increase on last year."

Mr Lawlor said QBuild took on apprentices in a range of building trades each year.

"This year's intake brings the total number of QBuild apprentices and traineeships to 850 since the Beattie Government was elected," he said.

"This state government's training initiative is a real investment in the future of our state's building industry with many QBuild apprentices eventually working in the private sector."

Mr Lawlor said the QBuild apprentices would gain experience in the maintenance of government buildings including schools, as well as helping construct new building projects throughout the region.
