The State Government today announced it would provide more than $143,000 towards upgraded facilities at Southport State High School.

The funds are part of a total of $5.67 million being provided for 41 projects under the under the Government's Smart Schools Subsidy Scheme.

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, said the scheme supported the efforts of schools and parents' associations to develop new facilities

"The subsidy program provides money to help local projects happen," Mr Lawlor said.

"In our local area, a total of $143,470 will help the Southport State High School refurbish the school's hospitality block to create two large kitchen spaces with new flooring, benches, sinks, ovens and roof ventilation.

"The classroom adjacent to the kitchen will be transformed into a function centre, providing the school with an exceptional hospitality training venue."

Education Minister, Rod Welford, said the maximum subsidy provided under the Smart Schools Subsidy Scheme for an individual project was $500,000, although this could be increased for projects in remote areas.

"Sporting ovals, performing arts centres, community halls and new playgrounds and fitness trails are among the projects planned for 2006-07," Mr Welford said.

"These are all projects developed by local school communities to benefit students, and our Government is pleased to be able to provide financial support.

"I want to congratulate local P&Cs for taking a lead role in planning, fundraising and applying for these subsidies, which can help bring projects to fruition."

A total of $13.56 million is being provided to schools over the next three years under the Smart Schools Subsidy Scheme to support local projects.

The funds are in addition to a record $455.1 million provided in 2005-6 for capital works in Queensland state schools.

This included $147 million for schools' growth, including two new schools and $81.6 million for facilities for the statewide implementation of the new preparatory year in 2007.
