Peter Lawlor, Member for Southport, announced today that the re-elected Beattie Government will commit $2.5 million for a new state-of-the-art Home Economics Block at Southport High School.
Mr Lawlor said "the new block will feature modern kitchen facilities which will be suitable for delivering Certificate courses in Hospitality in the near future".

"This new facility will provide a great opportunity for students at Southport High to study Hospitality in one of the best facilities on the Gold Coast" Mr Lawlor said.
Work is expected to commence on the new block next year, with a view to being completed in 2008.
Principal of Southport State High School Rob Stones, was elated with the news of the new facility.
"Many of our students are keen to break into hospitality as it is very prominent industry here on the Gold Coast" he said.
"This facility will be instrumental in advancing those students skills in hospitality" Mr Stones said.
Whilst constructing the hospitality block, Southport High will also be re-locating the current entrance to the school from busy Smith Street to Brooke Avenue to provide greater access.
"Moving the entrance to the adjacent Brooke Avenue will provide a safer entrance for students, parents and teachers, and will make it easier for the school to plan internal traffic arrangements, "Mr Lawlor said.
The current school entrance is on the crest of the hill and adjacent to the current Home Economics facilities," he said.
The Beattie Government has announced it will spend $900 million over the next five years modernising existing state school infrastructure and providing new facilities.
The 'Tomorrow's Schools' program includes $50 million in 2006 - 07 for small projects in state schools identified by Parents and Citizens Associations as urgent and essential.
