The new Magistrate appointed to Southport, Michael O'Driscoll, was officially sworn in to the position today.

Attorney-General Kerry Shine, who attended the swearing in ceremony at the Southport Magistrates Court, congratulated Magistrate O'Driscoll on his appointment.

"Southport Magistrates Court is often regarded as one of Queensland's busiest courts," Mr Shine said.

For instance, criminal lodgements in the Southport Magistrates Court in 2005-06 were second only to Brisbane and dealing with 16,357 defendants and a total of 31,631 charges.

"Magistrate O'Driscoll will be a familiar face of justice after serving as an acting Magistrate since 1997 and Clerk of the Court at Coolangatta since 1991," Mr Shine said.

As an Acting Magistrate, Mr O'Driscoll has performed judicial duties at Brisbane, Southport, Coolangatta, Beaudesert, Inala, Ipswich, HollandPark, Wynnum, Cleveland, Beenleigh and Children's Court Brisbane.

Mr O'Driscoll has also served in the Office of the Clerk of the Court in Rockhampton, Blackwater, Brisbane and Coolangatta.
