The new Southport Police Station has been officially opened in a special ceremony attended by Member for Southport Peter Lawlor and Police Minister Judy Spence.

"This is a great day for police on the Gold Coast who now have a new station that is sate-of -the- art and has been designed to meet policing requirements now and into the future" Ms Spence said.

"We made the decision to build this new facility after viewing the old Southport Station in 2004" Ms Spence said.

Mr Lawlor said a refurbishment was out of the question as police needed more room, better facilities and modern infrastructure to deal with the fast growing community on the Gold Coast".

"The new station ensures police will be better supported in their fight against crime with better operational resources, improved infrastructure and working conditions."

The Southport Station is purpose built and is equipped for the future with a holding cell, two interview rooms - with electronic recording facilities, a major incident room, secure front counter, breath analysis room, a facility to store equipment and a dedicated intelligence room.

The Beattie Government is committed to ensuring Queensland's police have the best possible infrastructure, resources and support to work with the community in fighting crime.

"Since we were elected in 1998, we have increased police numbers from 6,800 to more than 9,200 today" Ms Spence said.

Police are achieving good results in reducing crime, as Queensland's overall crime rate has dropped by 16 percent over the past four years.

If the Labor Government is re-elected, we will spend $260 million over four years to create six new police divisions and build more than 20 new and replacement police stations and facilities.

The Labor Government will also fund a $2 million Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Squad for police, and introduce new anti-graffiti laws to ban the sale of spraypaint to under - 18 year olds.
