The Gold Coast is better equipped to respond to patient demand and relieve the strain on its emergency department with Robina Hospital's new 32- bed ward now fully operational.
All available beds at Robina Hospital are now being utilised for Gold Coast patients.
Six doctors and the equivalent of 20 full time nurses have been recruited to treat the additional patients. These increased doctor numbers at Robina will also support patients with a higher level of clinical need in areas such as renal dialysis and palliative care at the hospital.
Appropriate patients are now being transferred directly from Southport Hospital to hospital wards at Robina to better spread the workload, "Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said.
The additional beds now open at Robina will soon be followed by a new ward at Southport Hospital which will house approximately 30 more beds for the fast growing Gold Coast region.
Health Minister Stephen Robertson said the new ward was a significant step in the countdown to the opening of Robina's new emergency department.
The construction of the new emergency department at Robina continues to run on schedule.
