New apprentices start building their careers

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, today congratulated five new apprentices who have started their construction careers in the South Coast region.

Mr Lawlor said the apprentices were among 100 new apprentices and trainees who were successful in winning jobs across Queensland with the state government's training and maintenance organisation, QBuild.

"With almost 1,300 applicants vying for the 100 training positions these young people faced tough competition to secure their place," Mr Lawlor said.

"The Southport depot is taking on four apprentices - a carpenter, a plumber, a glazer, an electrical mechanic - and one construction worker trainee.

Among the successful applicants in the South Coat region were: Christopher Farr of Andrews (carpentry); Shannon Fitzgerald of Surfers Paradise (plumbing); Benson McJannett of Labrador (construction work); Joshua O'Dea (glazing); and Lachlan Willmott of Burleigh Waters (electrical mechanic).

Mr Lawlor said QBuild's apprenticeship program had attracted a diverse range of applicants from across the state.

"Ages for the full-time apprenticeships range from 17 through to the early 30s, with school-based apprentices all starting at age 15," he said.

"Irrespective of age, they will all begin their careers with safety training and the provision of work-related equipment before they start learning on-site.

"The skills they will gain as they progress in their apprenticeships will give them a head start, equipping them with life-long trade skills that will enhance their future career prospects.

"QBuild has a strong reputation for excellence in training apprentices, and the apprenticeship program is a real investment in the future of our state's building industry.

"About 60 percent of the new apprentices are based outside Brisbane, so the program also represents a massive investment in our state's regional skills base."

Mr Lawlor said the full 2004 QBuild intake included 86 full-time apprentices, four school-based apprentices, two horticultural trainees and five construction worker trainees.

He said they would gain skills in a diverse range of areas from carpentry and plumbing to stonemasonry and air-conditioning mechanics.

Inductions of the new workers took place in regional offices across the state.
