State-of-the-art equipment valued at almost $180,000 has been presented to paramedics in the Southport area.
Emergency Services Minister and Member for Southport Peter Lawlor handed over the equipment - which was donated by the Southport and District Local Ambulance committee (LAC) - in a ceremony at the Southport Ambulance Station today.
Mr Purcell said that the Southport and District LAC had done a fantastic job to raise $180,000, which was used to purchase defibrillators, CPR mannequins and other equipment such as personal radios and recliner chairs for paramedics.
The equipment will be used by Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) personnel across the Southport district. The QAS provides necessary equipment to paramedics, with LAC's providing further integral support to paramedics.
"The great support from the LAC makes the work of our local paramedics just a little bit easier," Mr Lawlor said.
"The Southport Ambulance Station is very lucky to have such a dedicated and active group of volunteers. I would like to thank President Diane Hayson and the members of the Southport and District LAC for their ongoing commitment to ambulance services in the region.
"There is a large network of LACs throughout the State, with all doing great work such as fundraising and other activities to support their local ambulance stations.
"The dedication of LACs has helped make the QAS a world leader in pre-hospital care," Mr Lawlor said.
Mr Purcell said that although Queensland's rapidly growing and ageing population was increasing demand, the QAS was getting to more people, more quickly, than ever before; with 98 per cent of patients satisfied or very satisfied with its service. Local Ambulance Committees have played a big role in this success.
"The introduction of the Community Ambulance Cover in 2003 has ensured a sound funding base for the QAS, and that all Queenslanders get ambulance treatment in an emergency. The CAC raises about $113 million a year, which is about one third of the total ambulance budget.
