STATE Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, has gone in to bat for the Queens Cricket Club, scoring almost $30,000 in funding for a major upgrade of their Neville Avenue grounds.
The club will use the money to install oval lighting to enable both junior and senior squads the opportunity to train in the evening year-round for the first time.
" During winter we used to have to pull up stumps when the sun went down at around 5.00pm, but now our members will be able to train longer after school or after work," Queens President, Greg Chaplin, said.
" The club benefit will be enormous, whether it be for our seniors or the five junior squads we will field this year.
" Anyone who has ever tried fundraising in any sports club knows how hard it is to raise money for major capital improvements through chook raffles and so forth, so this grant is very warmly received I can assure you," he said.
Mr Lawlor said he was happy to help.
" The Queens Cricket Club is one of the Gold Coast's oldest and most successful sporting organisations and I was pleased to be able to lend a hand with the funding application," Mr Lawlor said.
" Southport sporting and community groups have done very well from the Fund over the past three or so years and I look forward to seeing many more successful applications in the future," he said.
