Students at A B Paterson College at Arundel celebrated the official opening of the new $1.4 million science laboratories at the school's 16th Founders Day on Sunday 28th May.

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor opened the facilities, an extension to the Oliphant Building, on behalf of the Education Minister Rod Welford.

"Students from Years 7-12 will now undertake all of their science classes in the fully equipped laboratories, giving them the opportunity to put theory into practice," Mr Lawlor said.

"The extension includes three new laboratories complete with state-of-the-art equipment, including specialised equipment that students will use to analyse DNA for Year 10 forensics and Year 12 human genetics studies.

"A fourth laboratory will be outfitted when the college's new performing arts centre is completed later in the year."

Mr Lawlor said since the college was established in 1991, it had prided itself on delivering a well-rounded education for its 1270 students, with an emphasis on the importance of science and technology.

"Students are encouraged to think scientifically and to apply science to practical situations in the local community, such as environmental monitoring of the lagoon in Harley Park," he said.

"All students undertake at least one science subject each year through to Year 12 with their options including physics, chemistry, biology, marine studies and marine and aquatic practices.

"The college provides real applications of science, for example, studying physics through the forces involved in the operation of super rides at local theme parks, and the study of flight through working with a local light aircraft club."

Mr Lawlor said the Beattie Government had invested more than $237 000 towards the new facilities.

"I would like to congratulate the school community for raising more than $1.1 million towards the project, demonstrating their commitment to providing first-class learning facilities for students."
