Sixteen mature-aged jobseekers today graduated from a course which has set them up for new careers in retailing.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the group was the latest to pass through a program custom-designed by the National Retail Association to give older workers a new career opportunity.
"This program recognises that the retail industry could benefit from an influx of mature-aged workers, and has set up a great training scheme for them," Mr Lawlor said.
"People entering the program receive basic training with the Association and are then placed with host employers to gain hands-on experience to help them move on to the next stage of their lives."
The Minister for Employment, Training and Industrial Relations Tom Barton said the association had been a "great partner" in the State Government's fight to reduce long-term unemployment among people over 40.
"This program has been a terrific success. Of the 642 people it has assisted so far, 228 have found jobs."
The State Government has backed the project with funding from its Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative which has helped create more than 84 000 jobs across Queensland since 1998. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 12:00 AM
