Ladies and Gentlemen

It is my pleasure to be here today to officially open this unit complex on behalf of the Minister for Public Works, Housing and Racing, Robert Schwarten.

This public housing complex, an initiative of the Queensland Department of Housing, is helping to address some of the housing need in this area.

Over $3.6 million was provided for the construction of 15, two-bedroom apartments, including five adaptable apartments, on Department of Housing land.

The units were designed by the Department of Public Works.

Sommer and Staff Constructions Pty Ltd constructed the complex, with construction commencing on 23 March 2004 and completed on 14 January 2005.

I'm pleased to officially open this wonderful housing complex on behalf of the Minister for Public Works, Housing and Racing, Robert Schwarten and to name it in honour of Mr Maxwell Smales.

Mr Smales has spent his entire life on the Gold Coast, with the exception of his one year of service with the Royal Australian Air Force in 1945, and lived with his family in Pohlman Street for 40 years.

During 48 years of dedicated service to local government before retiring in 1990, Mr Smales held positions with the Southport Town Council before it amalgamated with other councils to form the South Coast Town Council - now Gold Coast City Council.

Mr Smales spent the last 25 years of his career with the Albert Shire Council where he was Chief Finance Officer and Secretary of the Logan and Albert Library Board.

Mr Smales' involvement with the local community has seen him serve as Secretary of the Southport Coronation Celebrations Committee in 1953 and of the Southport Memorial Clock Tower Committee, which helped build a sandstone clock to commemorate lives lost in World Wars I and II.

For 30 years, Mr Smales was Treasurer of the Gold Coast Primary Schools Rugby League Association and is a life member and co-patron of the association.

Minister Schwarten said that he had no hesitation in recommending Maxwell Smales as deserving the highest recognition for his remarkable efforts throughout the years.

Robert Schwarten firmly believes in naming public buildings after local identities.

And I agree with him - it is one sure way we can record history for future generations.

The standard of today's public housing buildings is high with homes built to complement their surrounding neighbourhoods.

Each unit is self-contained with a kitchen, bathroom, laundry, clothesline and a private patio providing an outdoor living area.

All external areas have been designed for low maintenance.

There are 13 covered car parking spaces, with five of these designed to meet wheelchair accessibility requirements.

Five units were designed and built to adaptable standards.

These units meet the needs of people who have mobility impairments or require full wheelchair accessible accommodation.

Using adaptable design for new construction projects is a smart initiative of the State Government because it provides flexibility in housing design and reduces the long-term costs associated with delivering housing for all Queenslanders.

The new dwellings provide long-term housing solutions for the tenants, including those with specific disability needs and will be well-utilised by an ageing local community both now and in the future.

I congratulate all parties involved with this project on the commendable work they have done, and wish the tenants all the best for the future.

Thank you.
