Member for Southport Peter Lawlor has joined club members today to officially launch newly refurbished and expanded facilities at the Parkwood Sharks Junior Rugby League Club.

Mr Lawlor said the Bligh Government provided more than $300,000 in funding from its Community Renewal program and Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative for the expansion of the club.

He said the upgrade would help deliver enhanced recreational and sporting activities for children, women and men of all ages, as well as work experience in the building trade for 12 local residents.

"The Parkwood Sharks Junior Rugby League Club has over 400 members and plays a significant role in the local community," Mr Lawlor said.

"The improved facility, equipped with a new roof over the change rooms and bathroom facilities for residents with a disability, will also be used for training in hospitality and driver safety."

Mr Lawlor praised the residents, volunteers and tradespeople for their enthusiasm during the upgrade and completion of additional work to the facility.

"A licensed builder with training qualifications trained 12 people for 14 weeks to develop their skills in tiling, landscaping, bricklaying, painting and general maintenance," he said.

"The upgrade is well-deserved by the Parkwood Sharks Junior Rugby League Club, which houses a wide range of sporting activities including touch football, petanque and surf lifesavers.

"The Club will be able to expand its activities for its growing number of members."

The upgrade has been funded by the Department of Housing through its Community Renewal program, the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations, Career Employment Australia and the Gold Coast City Council.

Community Renewal is a Queensland Government initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing. Renewal activities in Labrador are delivered in partnership with local residents, the Gold Coast City Council, and other government and non-government agencies.

Since 1998, the State Government, through its Community Renewal program, has invested more than $112.5 million in renewal communities around Queensland, including more than $4.5 million in the Gold Coast South area.
